Aloha and Welcome to Sustainable Island Products
Sustainable Island Products is a family-owned, Hawaii-based distributor of more than 450 eco-friendly, compostable, and recyclable products. We supply sustainable alternatives for many single-use items commonly used in restaurants, grocery stores, schools, hotels, and offices.
That includes cold cups, deli containers, hot cups and soup containers, cutlery, plates, clamshells, napkins, paper towels, pizza boxes, glass bottles, and jars.
We feel strongly that part of our responsibility is to do everything we can to protect our unique and diverse island home. For this reason, SIP recently became a Certified B Corporation, striving daily to find new ways to be more economically and environmentally sustainable. (Take a look at our B Impact Report here.)
Our philosophy is closely linked to environmental stewardship. We place a high priority on creating a positive social impact and fostering a healthy Hawaiian economy. That’s why we guarantee the compostable nature of our products as well as their performance.
But SIP’s commitment to a sustainable Hawaii extends beyond our product offerings.
Investing in a Greener Kauai
We give back a minimum of 20% of our profits to social, education, and environmental cause organizations throughout Hawaii. We also offset our shipping, delivery, and utilities-based carbon emissions through landfill gas capture, renewable energy products, and farm power projects.
Twice a year, our Cups for a Cause program designs custom cold cups that highlight local environmental and social non-profits. These cups raise awareness for each group’s important work. We augment those efforts with a donation of $2,000 from cup sales to each highlighted organization.
About Our Products
All of our products are certified compostable with the exception of our glass bottles and jars. We chose to only distribute compostable products because unlike biodegradable or recyclable products,
compostable products can be mixed with food waste and composted at an industrial facility. In a commercial composting facility, they will break down in 12 to 16 weeks or less.
In contrast, biodegradable products have no set timetable to break down if returned to nature. Additionally, only 10% of all plastics are recycled in the United States, and about 25% of plastics placed in recycling bins still wind up in landfills due to contamination.
